The contraceptive implant is a long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC).A contraceptive implant is implanted beneath the skin on the inside of the arm and provides a very effective and comfortable method of long-term contraception. In Australia, there is just one kind of contraceptive implant available: Implanon NXT. The implant constantly releases little quantities of progestogen, a hormone that inhibits conception. The implant requires a prescription and must be put and removed by a qualified doctor or nurse.
For Implanon insertion, the process is relatively quick and painless as we numb the area with a local anaesthetic before using a special applicator to insert the implant. For Implanon removal, we will administer a local anaesthetic before making a small incision and using forceps or a similar instrument to remove the implant.
